The McEwen-German House

Hartzog & Silva is located in the historic McEwen-German House, at 123 Fifth Avenue North in downtown Franklin. The house dates from 1870 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The house is built in the Victorian style, with large rooms, high ceilings, and a long stairway unbroken by a landing.  It sits on a section of the eleven acres of land purchased by Franklin lawyer and businessman John B. McEwen around 1842.  This original acreage included much of what is now Fair Street.  Following the wedding of the McEwens’ daughter, Frances Adelicia, to Dr. Daniel German on January 14, 1869, her parents gave the couple the home and surrounding property as a wedding gift.  The Germans lived there for many years and raised a family in the home.

On May 14, 1948, the building was sold to the War Memorial Public Library.  Many area residents remember it as home to the local library from 1948 until 1980.  In November of 1976, the house was bought by the Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County, and was later sold to a bank.  Hartzog & Silva relocated our offices to the second floor of the building in 1983.  In June of 1994, we purchased the property to serve as the permanent home of the Law Offices of Hartzog & Silva, as well as that of our sister company, Heritage Title & Escrow Company, Inc.

Clients can find parking adjacent to the building.
